Bluefin Tuna

Bluefin Tuna is a unique, contemplative work dedicated to the endangered Southern Bluefin tuna of the Australian coast. Almost monochromatic in palette, the composition is immersed in pale blue water, where silver and deep blue tuna move quietly through the space, creating a sense of depth, stillness, and reverence. Built on a rich textural underlay, the surface incorporates real silver leaf, partially veiled with oil paint. This layered technique gives the artwork a mesmerising, shifting quality: as the viewer moves, the silver leaf responds like water or a mirror, reflecting light and subtly changing colour. The work invites slow looking, evoking both the fragile beauty of marine life and its constant movement beneath the surface. Description
The southern bluefin tuna is an example of nature ‘champions’ that in a process of evolution developed unique abilities. It is one of the larger bony fishes - up to 2.5 metres (8 ft 2 in) and weighing up to 260 kilograms (570 lb). It can maintain the temperature of their muscles above the temperature of surrounding water. It is an opportunistic feeder that can travel vertically through the water column These advantages enables them to maintain high metabolic output for predation and migrating large distances and depth.
